Day 7 of 30 Day Wheat Free Diet
30 Day Wheat Free Diet Day 7
Another first, a day off but this time with my family at home with me. This day should not be any different than my last day off from work, until my daughter asks me to take her shopping. Now I am going to be away from home, but not at work with my drawerful of gluten free emergency foods.
I try all morning to figure out where we can stop for lunch and what I can eat. Luckily I eat a few crackers with edamame dip and stick a gluten free granola bar in my pocket before we takeoff.
The day starts off easy enough, a day searching through twenty year old leisure suits (did I mention that my daughter wanted to go thrift shopping). How cool is that?
Pretty cool until half way into the third store, and well before I hit the bins of phono albums ( OK I was going to make a witty comment about how 97% of the internet had no idea what a phono album is, until my word processor-Word 2010 highlighted “phono” and had no idea what the word was). I started to feel the jittery shaking that I felt on Wednesday coming on. This time the shaking in my hands was not as bad, but I felt as if I might pass out. Both times I had this feeling a subtle greying out. But very subtle, I never felt it imminent, just a slight possibility.
Udi’s to the rescue
I took the Udi’s gluten free granola bar from my pocket and before I was half way through the bar I felt the jittery feelings disappearing. Although I was glad to see the uneasy low blood sugar symptoms go away. I was not happy that they came back in the first place.
I had hoped my blood sugar swings would level out without wheat’s blood sugar spikes.
Did I Just Eat Gluten?
I might have eaten my first accidental gluten product. We went to dinner at a friend’s house last night (I’m writing this the morning after day 7) and had a nice BBQ we had some steaks, chicken, grilled veggies, a perfect gluten free meal. Before dinner we picked at some almonds, and honey roasted peanuts. I didn’t think of it then but the next morning I wondered what they coated the peanuts with. While at the grocery store the next morning I decided to check out the ingredients on the honey roasted peanuts and the first can contained wheat, but luckily every other package did not. So who knows?
So beware wheat can be lurking anywhere, even on a tiny little peanut.
